The voice behind
Grab Your Y

Dr. Brian Garrett, aka Dr. G, in black and white

I'm Dr. Brian Garrett, aka Dr. G, creator and host of Grab Your Y.

I'm a proud Morehouse man, biochemist, youth development and mission-driven leader, builder, and Black man still doing the work. My path has moved through science, nonprofit leadership, program design, five years of therapy, storytelling, and years of work with Black boys and men.

Grab Your Y brings those threads together. It is a podcast and growing platform for honest conversations with Black men about who we are, not just what we do. We explore our relationships with ourselves, each other, and society, and we make room for identity, emotion, purpose, healing, and becoming.

I built Grab Your Y because I believe there is more than one way to be a man, and Black men deserve a space to name more of what we carry and imagine more of who we can become.

The Name

Grab Your Why

In college, me and my boys used to say “grab your Y,” as in your Y chromosome. It was our way of saying “man up.” I’ve grown since then, and I don’t use that phrase anymore.

When the podcast came to me, so did the name, but with new meaning. Grab Your Y is no longer about manning up. It’s about finding your why: who you are, why you’re here, and why you show up the way you do.

Less about proving you’re a man, more about becoming one, in your own way.
